Chemistry Club
Chemistry Club is an innovative online learning platform for 11–14-year-olds that sparks and nurtures an interest in chemistry through independent learning.
What is Chemistry Club?

Chemistry Club is an innovative, unique online interactive learning platform for 11–14-year-olds. It aims to increase the accessibility of chemistry for young learners at the start of their secondary education. It is a great tool that sparks and nurtures an interest in chemistry, promotes independent learning, and offers additional subject knowledge and support in a fun and engaging way.

Learners can log in from anywhere in the world and learn something new through bite-sized activities that explore different topics in chemistry.

The platform has been shortlisted for an Education Resource Award and Bett Award in recent years in recognition of the innovative nature of the resource, its impact on learning, and how the resource supports and enhances students' enjoyment of, and engagement with, the subject.

FAQs
  • I would like to register with your site for our school but when trying to do is it says “domain not recognised”. What do I need to do?

To register your school to gain access to the platform we require a school point of contact. This is to verify the student registrations from your school. To register, a teacher or staff member at the school needs to complete the following form: https://saltersinstitute.org/programmes/chemistry-club/register-your-school/

The upload of your school to the site is a manual process. The team here will upload the school information to the Chemistry Club website and send a notification when this is complete. Once this has been done then students will be able to register for a profile.

  • I have completed the form and my school has been uploaded but when students are trying to register it is still showing that the domain is not registered. Why is this happening?

The likelihood is that the domain submitted on the form doesn’t match the one that they are registering with. Please send us the student e-mail domain at chemistryclub@saltersinstitute.org and we will add this to your school profile. Once this has been updated students should be free to register.

  • I'm trying to register but the system says: “error, the account with that email already exists". Can you please help?

Try resetting your password on the login page first using the e-mail address you are trying to register with.

If this isn’t the issue, each new registration requires a unique e-mail address to register, like most other platforms where you set-up a profile. This is because they need a unique identifier.

The system is built so that when students register, it uses the school e-mail domain to identify the school they attend, which then will need to be verified by the school point of contact through the teacher portal on the platform. This is to ensure the platform is being used by 11-14 year olds and is for safeguarding protocols. With this system it isn’t possible to use general/personal e-mail addresses as an alternative.

  • What information will I receive as a teacher about the students taking part?

As a registered teacher you will have access to a portal page for your school. This will include: all the registered students on the platform from your school, a running total of the activities completed by all students for that month, and the ranking of your school worldwide and at a country level. We recognise the top students on the platform in the UK at our Annual Awards Ceremony held every December in London.

We believe that any participation from students should be celebrated at a school level. For this reason, you won’t be provided with the progress of each individual.

  • Is there the ability to authorise multiple students at the same time?

Yes, you will receive a notification e-mail every Tuesday morning to let you know if there are any new student registrations to authorise. You will then need to login and confirm whether these students are pupils at your school, thereby authorising your students to access the platform.

This change reflects feedback from teachers and replaces the verification link previously sent via e-mail.

  • It says that I have XX number of active students – what does this number mean?

This is the total number of students for your school that are registered on the platform and can login to complete any of the Chemistry Club activities. They are the students who you have authorised. Their status changed from ‘pending registration’ to active students.

We will send half-termly reports detailing the students that have been logging in and completing activities.

  • In the school dashboard I can see ‘Activities for MONTH YEAR’ and ‘Activities completed over the last 12 months’. What are the numbers telling me?

Each total is the cumulative total of that type of activity completed during that calendar month. This includes if a student goes back to a theme from a previous month. Any completed activity will be counted in the calendar month in which the student completed it.

  • Can there be more than one teacher or technician registered to the school?

There can be more than one teacher or technician registered as a point of contact, both will have the ability to verify the student registrations. If you would like additional teacher profiles set-up, then we are able to assist with this. Please send us an e-mail at chemistryclub@saltersinstitute.org and we can organise the upload.

  • I would really like to register a child who is home educated. Is there an option for a home educator to be able to register a child?

Unfortunately, currently we are unable to offer access to the platform to home educators. This is due to the validation process required for learners to register. The process requires users to have a unique e-mail domain that links with their school.

Home educator access is something that we hope to introduce in the future as we know the importance of reaching these students, it just isn’t within scope currently. If you are interested to hear about updates to the platform, then please contact us at chemistryclub@saltersinstitute.org.

We do however, have other provisions for homes educators. These include:

The Salters’ Institute is the flagship charity of the Salters’ Company.

Chemistry has been our passion since we were founded in 1918. Since then, we have continued to promote excellence in the teaching and learning of chemistry and related sciences. We connect learners and educators to opportunities that transform their perception of chemistry, what it can do, how it shapes our lives and the career pathways it offers. Chemistry opens doors.

Through our digital and in-person outreach, we provide creative, fun and inspiring spaces to explore chemistry, discover its potential as a subject, and recognise those who are using chemistry to make the world a better place.
